We understand the progress of technology. When a superior technology comes along it displaces the older way of doing things. Thus we no longer use cassettes, VCR’s and VHS video tapes. Why would you watch a video tape of a movie when you can watch a high definition Blu-ray disk? I’m thankful for such advances. The computer I use to record my thoughts is a huge improvement over the typewriter I once used.
If we desire to impact the lives of others, we will need to have something better than what those around us have. That will require two things that we see in Paul. First, we must believe that knowing Christ is better than everything. What an outlandish claim! What if Steven Spielberg offered to make me the star of a movie (which would be a miracle since I don’t look like a matinee idol and can’t act at all) and he offered to pay me $20 million to do it? Is knowing Christ better than that? Paul claimed it is. What if I could somehow have the abilities of a quarterback and could play in the NFL? Is knowing Christ better than that? Paul claimed it is. In fact, the Scriptures insist that being a child of God and knowing him is better than anything else on earth. There is nothing wrong with being famous or rich or having great things in this world, but if we are to make an impact we’re going to have to believe that what we have in knowing Christ is better and that if we had a choice between knowing Jesus on one hand and having all the stuff of the world on the other, we’d choose Jesus in a heartbeat.
What will enable us to not just say that, but to believe it in our souls? The same thing that enabled Paul to believe it. We have to actually know God. When we actually know him, when we experience the power of being loved by him and experiencing his joy, his peace, his hope, his comfort and his strength in us, we will believe it. All those things of this earth may be nice, but they cannot give us peace, love, hope, nor the comfort and strength of our God. To make a difference we will have to believe that nothing compares with knowing God, and we will have actually know him in a real and life-changing way.
