One of those lessons is that while Ella is obviously a very bright child, she needs someone watching over her continually. She apparently has excellent hearing and is quite sensitive to loud noises. She hates the vacuum cleaner and if Laurie turns on the blender to make a smoothie poor little Ella seems to think the world is coming to an end. Startled by such unwelcome and frightening noises she crawls at flank speed to the nearest adult that she is familiar with, wanting to be held. Were the poor little kid left on her own when such a scary noise occurs it would be a terrifying experience for her. Fortunately she has people caring for her, and all it takes to comfort her is for Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa to hold her. It occurs to me that we live in a pretty scary world where we occasionally hear things that are frightening. The smart response is to do what Ella does, which is to crawl at top speed to our Father who loves us. Like her we should know that as he is holding us we have nothing to fear.
It hit me that we are just like her. We are as spiritually unstable and unaware much of the time as she is physically unstable and unaware. Our heavenly Father is continually watching over us, but I suspect we continually teeter our way into dangerous situations and are never even cognizant of the fact that the Father is protecting us from harm, guiding us away, catching us when we tumble. We might even get a little testy with him when he keeps us from going someplace that he knows could be harmful for us, but we are certain that we want to go there.
The experience of caring for Ella has caused me to be more aware and much more thankful that we have a Father in heaven who is caring for us. He watches over us every minute of every day and night. In Luke 12:6-7 Jesus said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows.” What a comfort and joy it is to know that wherever I go the Father is with me, protecting me, even if I don’t perceive him, just as we watch over little Ella to protect her. What a great God we have.
